I set out on a recent neighborhood walk to photograph a color wheel in the hues of a Seattle summer day.

Today
by Billy Collins

If ever there were a spring day so perfect,
so uplifted by a warm intermittent breeze

that it made you want to throw
open all the windows in the house

and unlatch the door to the canary’s cage,
indeed, rip the little door from its jamb,

a day when the cool brick paths
and the garden bursting with peonies

seemed so etched in sunlight
that you felt like taking

a hammer to the glass paperweight
on the living room end table,

releasing the inhabitants
from their snow-covered cottage

so they could walk out,
holding hands and squinting

into this larger dome of blue and white,
well, today is just that kind of day.

Back in July, I posted a mini-series called “Walking the Color Wheel.”  As I walked around Seattle, I paid special attention to the colors of summer — reds, oranges, yellows, greens, blues, and purples.  With this post, I’ll take you around the color wheel again to share my enjoyment of the colors of autumn.

Red is the color of maple leaves.

Red globe amaranthus

Orange pumpkin

Orange-colored dahlia

Yellow hypericum

Fall foliage in yellows near Manson, WA

Hairy green chestnut burrs

Pelargonium leaves

(Occasional) blue skies

Late, fading hydrangea

Purplish hydrangea

Purple dahlia

The Enchantment of the Sky

August 29, 2012

Blue sky with clouds

Summer sky with clouds

“The enchantment of the sky, ever changing beauty almost ignored.  Beyond words, without fixed form, not to be understood, or stated.  It ravishes away dullness, worry, even pain.  It graces life when nothing else does.  It is the first marvel of the day.”
— Florida Scott Maxwell, The Measure of My Days

” . . . the sky is always untamed and its infinite shores always stretched beyond our reach.”
— Peter Loudon, Drawing Closer to Nature:  Making Art in Dialogue with the Natural World

“A sky without clouds is a meadow without flowers, a sea without sails.”
— Henry David Thoreau, Journals, June 24, 1840
