Handsome Paths

“And what a dynamic, handsome object is a path!”
— Gaston Bachelard, The Poetics of Space: The Classical Look at How We Experience Places
I haven’t been out for a wilderness hike yet this year, but I have been enjoying some urban walks. I love to go out with an open outlook and see what interesting things cross my path. These pictures were taken on a recent outing to Bainbridge Island. I couldn’t resist following this enticing green path down from the commercial center to the water. And I was rewarded with a rare glimpse of a hummingbird!

The hummingbird photo is lovely. I like the way the stem of the flower seems to be rising up to make the blossom more accessible to the hummingbird.

Simple! and OOOOO at even catching more than a shadow of hummingbird. They are not birds that I have known that I’ve seen in years. Even then, I thought at first it was a very large bee, and I was afraid to get stung. It was swooping about my head!

I was once on a hike in dry, hot Colorado, and as I sunburn quite easily, I was carrying a red umbrella as parasol. It attracted a rather persistent hummingbird, who must have thought my umbrella was a giant red flower.
