Incoming! Incoming! The Snow Geese Are Arriving

Making a landing

The annual migration of snow geese to their winter feeding grounds in the Skagit Valley is in full swing.  I am always thrilled when my visits to the Skagit Valley coincide with the snow geese’s feeding schedule.  I saw these birds settled in a field along the road on Fir Island, which is best reached via the Conway exit off of I-5.

The poem is wonderful! and the photos moreso. We used to see flocks like this, but they’ve moved a bit east. The years of drought had something to do with it, I’m sure. There’s a lot of irrigated rice to the east and good maize fields to the southwest – if I were a bird, I’d look for the best buffet table, too. And water – the drought surely has exacerbated things.

I’ll be crossing some flyways on my trip – fingers crossed!

  2. We rarely see them here but I catch them occasionally on my way to work in fields. I’ll have to make sure I watch to see if they are on the move here…fabulous pictures.

I’m not familiar with the flyways in NY state, and for much of my life, even in Minnesota, I did not pay attention to bird migrations. These snow geese in Skagit are so very visible and loud, you can’t miss them.

Amazing photos of these magnificent birds! I LOVE the poem….I might have to borrow that from you. I’d never even heard of Valerie Worth until I found your blog. Thanks for sharing her words and your images of the snowgeese!

Beautiful photos!…I always look for the swans too, when through the Skagit area, though not as plentiful as the Snow geese. I love their name! Snow geese! 🙂
They must summer up in the Artic?

I am always happy to see a healthy population of any species. Thanks for the photo of optimism
