Daylilies: Small Proportions, Short Measures and Tasty, Too

July 11, 2012

Daylilies in bloom in my garden

Lovely to look at and tasty, too

“Although it fall and die that night,
It was the plant and flower of light.
In small proportions we just beauty see,
And in short measures life may perfect be.”
— Ben Jonson, from “To the Immortal Memory and Friendship of that Noble Pair, Sir Lucius Cary and Sir Henry Morison

The daylilies are blooming in my garden.  I have quite a garden full, so I don’t feel at all bad about harvesting some to embellish my salads.  They are so pretty to look at, and tasty, too.

Quite a patch of daylilies in my garden

Toss some daylilies in a salad

A beautiful presentation!

I introduced my husband to them, too. He forked one daylily, looked at it askance, and asked, “What’s this?” But he ate it with no complaints! I like the crunchy texture they add to salads and sandwiches, and I like the taste, too.

The young shoots as well as the tubers are also edible and scrumptious. Rosemary, can’t remember if I’ve asked you about photos for my book? melanyrae62@yahoo.com
