Merry Christmas 2011

December 25, 2011

Nativity set designed by Jim Shore, Heartwood Creek

My sister, who is a dedicated quilter, gave this nativity set to my daughter, her god-daughter.  I love all the patchwork details.

When I was growing up, my family set out the same nativity set every year.  The various pieces were stored in a flat box, cushioned in little straw nests that conformed to the unique shape of each piece.  The baby Jesus in the manger was kept separate on the knick-knack shelf until midnight on Christmas morning, when he joined Mary and Joseph.  The three kings journeyed from the dining room to the rest of the nativity set, advancing foot by foot through the house, until their arrival on January 6th, the Epiphany.  The family nativity set came with shepherds, an oxen, a donkey, and lots of sheep.  I remember my younger sisters and brother lining the sheep up in long rows, playing when they should have been taking their naps.

I don’t know where my mother and father came by their nativity set, but it was definitely a quality set, and definitely cherished.

My daughter's nativity set with three kings

“We three kings of Orient are,
Bearing gifts we traverse afar,
Field and fountain, moor and mountain,
Following yonder star.”
— The Reverend John Henry Hopkins

Merry Christmas Rosemary-I keep my Jim Shore set out all year. Annika loves to line up everything two by two marching down the shelf. I set it back to order and when she comes the next time it is all rearranged to her liking again-and I never catch her at it!!!

I bet Annika will have good memories of this. You’ll have to set up one of those motion-sensitive “spy” cameras to catch her at it!

  4. Beautiful creche Rosemary. I love the colors! Happy 2nd day of Christmas!

It truly is a beautiful nativity set. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a colorful one. As soon as I leave your site I am going to look up Jim Shore.
I am a little late to wish you a Merry Christmas but let me get my best wishes for a blessed and happy new year in.
