Thrify Mittens
November 28, 2009
I love the thriftiness of my latest project — sewing mittens from old cast-off sweaters. I found a blue woolen sweater in a box of free stuff on the curb in my neighborhood. The owner was probably giving it away because it had shrunk. But the felted wool was perfect for making mittens. My oldest sister mailed the pattern to me. I like the mittens so much, that I made a few more pairs from some leftover fleece that I had in my scrap bag.

What a great project for holiday gifts! I spent part of yesterday helping my older daughter make a bed warming pad for her boyfriend. A simple project that will bring comfort and warmth for the winter, can be made from whatever fabric scraps are lying around, and conveys the knowledge that it was made especially for him.

Unfortunately, I do not have a downloadable pattern for these mittens. the pattern my sister sent did not name the designer. Sorry I can’t be more helpful!

Hi there, I ran across your mitten blog and the pattern your sister mailed to you is the same pattern I have used for years. I lost all my patterns in a house fire and would love to know the brand of the mitten pattern. I bought it at a fur store in anchorage many years ago and they are closed….

I’m sorry, but it was just a pattern on plain brown paper. No known brand name or designer. Sorry for your losses in the fire. I no longer sew and have given away my sewing supplies.

I make these all the time and have used two different patterns. A free one is available at Two Dancing Crows, mittens. The other is a McCalls pattern M5993. Hope this helps. They are great mittens!

Could you ask your sister if her pattern has a name or company on it? I cannot find this pattern anywhere….

You can find the McCalls pattern on Ebay. There are some mittens patterns on Pinterest. Search mitten patterns from sweaters. Hope this helps.

That’s fun! I cut the sleeves off a very soft & woolly sweater and made a pillow cover from it, years ago. I think the sleeves are long gone….too bad I didn’t save them. Thanks for the follow, and have a cozy holiday.
