Our Taste of New York’s Museum Scene

Our walks across Central Park took us between the two museums we visited on our first trip to New York City — the American Museum of Natural History and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  (We will have to save New York’s other museums for a future visit.)

I was very impressed with the splendid dioramas in the American Museum of Natural History.  I had seen some of the animals depicted on safari in Africa and the presentations here in the museum were outstanding.  Have a look:

I feel a bit silly to have found so much pleasure in photographing the stuffed animals in these dioramas (much easier than photographing live animals in the wild who refuse to hold their poses!).  But it was so easy to find pleasing compositions through my camera lens.  I think this reflects on how well these dioramas were designed.

The museum offers so many other treasures, too, including human artifacts.

Rosemary…these are stunning photographs!! I wonder where all the animals came from…I do hope they all died naturally! I am a supporter of the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennesse…would you mind if I e-mailed them your exquisite photo of the elephant? I will also certainly give credit where credit is due! :)
    Thank-you!

Yes, please feel free to email the photo, along with a link to this post. It would be fascinating (or possibly repulsive) to read aobut how the animals came to the museum. The museum did seem to present them respectfully.

I’ve always loved the displays, especially as a kid. I like how you captured them! You’ve chosen my two favorite museums to visit!
